I am so excited to share this beautifully written answer to my question for holistic health coach Abbey Sowick. Abbey was my roommate while I was living in Los Angeles. When she joined our home I had neglected my diet and health to the point that I was experiencing chronic fatique, acne, severe gut issues among other things. Abbey taught me and my daughter so much about food, nutrition, and how to value our health. Thank you Abbey for being such an amazing friend and for changing our lives.
What does beauty mean to you?
My name is Abbey Sowick and I am a holistic health coach, yoga instructor, health blogger and model. I am committed to a healthy lifestyle and sharing that with others so that people can feel empowered to lead a healthy, happy life. I prepare about 90% of my own food using organic, whole foods. The rest comes from an organic health food café that I work at. When I look at my lifestyle a bolded word that comes to mind is ‘simplicity’. In reference to preparing my own food, I choose a very simple route. I have learned over the years the foods that serve my body functionality better than others. A lot of the time I am eating a variety of sautéed greens, roasted sweet potatoes and poached eggs usually topped with some sort of homemade basil or parsley pesto. When it comes to cooking for others I get more creative, but simple, easy meals with whole ingredients are the way I go for myself. I meditate every morning and try to do something active every day as well. Activity for me doesn’t mean going to a crazy spin class or running 12 miles. I enjoy activities like hiking and attending a yoga class..
Following along the lines of the word ‘simplicity’ , this is also what beauty means to me. My beauty routine itself is very simple. I use jojoba oil to take off my makeup in the evening and use a natural oil blend moisturizer to follow ( it is a mix of jojoba, rose oil, carrot seed oil, grapeseed oil). I drink a lot of water and get plenty of sleep. Sleep is one of my favorite things to do ever!
Beauty to me is an inner quality in which we all have. Beauty is not something that we can grasp and absorb and it isn’t bought or sold. We all share the same light within us and to me beauty is the knowledge of that light and oneness with all of existence. Harnessing that compassion, empathy and understanding for one another is the most beautiful gift that exists on this planet.
This is one of my favorite excerpts by Paulo Coelho about elegance and beauty.
“Elegance tends to be mistaken for superficiality and mere appearance. Nothing could be further from the truth: some words are elegant, some can wound and destroy, but all are written with the same letters. Flowers are elegant, even when hidden among grasses in a meadow. The gazelle when it runs is elegant, even when it is fleeing from a lion.
Elegance is not an outer quality, but a part of the soul that is visible to others.
And even when passions run high, elegance does not allow the real ties binding two people to be broken.
Elegance lies not in the clothes we wear, but in the way we wear them.
It isn’t in the way we wield a sword, but in the dialogue we hold that could avoid a war.
Elegance is achieved when having discarded all superfluous things, we discover simplicity and concentration. The simpler the pose, the better; the more sober, the more beautiful.
And what is simplicity? It is the coming together of the true values of life.
Snow it pretty because it has only one colour. The sea is pretty because it appears to be a flat plane. The desert is beautiful because it seems to consist of only sand and rocks.
However, when we look more closely at each of these things, we discover how profound and complete they are, and recognize their qualities,
The simplest things in life are the most extraordinary. Let them reveal themselves.”
